You know that feeling when a photograph stops you — not because it's technically impressive, but because it makes you feel something you couldn't quite name until you saw it? That's what I'm after every time I leave the house before dawn. I'm Leon Neil, a fine art photographer based on Auckland's North Shore, New Zealand. I specialise in long-exposure coastal and landscape photography — and the kind of conditions most photographers drive home from. My work spans two worlds: the coastline of Aotearoa New Zealand, from the surf breaks at Piha to the tidal flats of Waiake and the Waitematā Harbour at blue hour; and the historic cities of Europe — medieval cathedrals, ancient stone, and streets that hold centuries in their cobblestones. I shoot at the edges of the day and the edges of the weather. Pre-dawn on a reef. A storm clearing at 5am in Nuremberg. The west rood screen of Naumburg Cathedral — UNESCO World Heritage, carved around 1250 — in September afternoon light with no one else in the nave. These aren't accidents. I go looking for them. From November to December 2026 I'm shooting through Singapore, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Lapland, Tromsø, Oslo, the Norwegian fjords, Iceland, and Vancouver — chasing aurora, polar night, glacier lagoons, and blue-hour cityscapes across the Northern Hemisphere winter.
