The Door That Held the Light

A 12th-century Romanesque portal in the nave of Naumburg Cathedral, caught in a shaft of afternoon sun at the precise angle that illuminated the carved tympanum above the arch and cast the shadow of a stone figure across the adjacent wall. The tympanum depicts the legend of St Giles — a hermit who sheltered a pursued animal and was wounded in its place — with a cross at the centre surrounded by acanthus scrollwork. The doorway below leads to the crypt: the oldest surviving part of the cathedral, predating everything built around it. The darkness beyond the threshold is real.

This image was not planned. The light did it.

Once per year — perhaps less — the September afternoon sun enters Naumburg Cathedral at this specific angle and strikes this specific portal. The shadow on the wall is a stone figure standing just outside the frame. The door leads to something nine hundred years old. The light found it for a few minutes on one afternoon in 2025 and will find it again, briefly, in the same season next year and every year after — but never in quite this way, with quite this quality of shadow, with the carved story of shelter and sacrifice lit from exactly this direction.
