The Passion in Stone

Westlettner, Naumburg Cathedral — Fine Art Heritage Print, UNESCO World Heritage, Germany

The west rood screen of Naumburg Cathedral — the Westlettner — created by the anonymous sculptor known only as the Naumburg Master around 1250. Eight Passion relief scenes, carved up to 35 centimetres deep from shell limestone, run across the upper register from Last Supper to Crucifixion. At the portal: the crucifixion group at human eye height, placed by the Master at precisely the scale that would force every worshipper to encounter it face to face. Above the arch: the Majestas Domini, Christ as Judge, painted in the quatrefoil. Through the portal: the east choir altar, the medieval stained glass, everything that lies beyond.

The reason Naumburg Cathedral has a UNESCO inscription.

The UNESCO World Heritage citation of 2018 specifically names the passion reliefs of this screen and the crucifixion group in this portal as outstanding examples of medieval architectural sculpture. This is not a photograph of a beautiful building. It is a photograph of the work that art historians consider without parallel in European medieval sculpture — made by an artist whose name was never recorded, whose achievement has outlasted everything that might have recorded it.

In a study, a library, a room where the buyer thinks about what it means for human beings to make things that last — this image belongs. It does not merely decorate a wall. It places something irreplaceable on it.
