The Light That Fell Since 1510

East Choir High Altar, Naumburg Cathedral — Fine Art Heritage Print, September 2025

The east choir high altar of Naumburg Cathedral — the liturgical heart of a UNESCO World Heritage Site — photographed in September 2025. The 1510 triptych altarpiece depicting the Virgin Mary flanked by St Catherine and St Barbara, set within a 1567 reredos of late Gothic and Renaissance stone. Medieval stained glass from the 14th and 15th centuries filtering coloured light through the Gothic lancet windows on both sides. The 14th-century vault above. Everything as it has been — more or less — for five centuries.

On 29 June 2026, four new stained glass windows designed by Professor Markus Lüpertz were unveiled in the east choir of Naumburg Cathedral. The space has been permanently altered. No photographer can now return to Naumburg and make this image. What you are looking at is September 2025 — the east choir before the change, the medieval glass in the windows as they were last seen, the altar receiving light that has been falling on it since 1510.

Some photographs become historical documents by accident. This one did.
